They use a
system, based on rule of thumb rather than scientific precision.
Length
Inch –
about the length of the first segment of a man’s thumb
Foot - 12
inches long, about the length of a man’s foot
Yard -
(meter) 3 feet long, the average walking stride
Staff - 6
ft long, height of ideal man, common length of spear shafts.
Bosh - (bow
shot) 100 yards, 300 ft, the maximum range of a skilled bowman.
KM -
(king’s mile) 1000 yards, 3000 ft.
Area
Tile - 1x1
foot.
Mat - 1x1
yard, 3x3 ft.
Acre - 1x1
Bosh, 100x100 yards, 300x300 ft.
Square KM -
10x10 Acres.
Estates
Free hold 0.5x2 KM, 100 acres. ( a big family farm
Small
2x2 KM, 400 acres. ( held by a knight
Medium 3x3
KM, 900 acres. ( held by a minor lord
Large
5x5 KM, 2,500
acres. ( held by a major lord
Barony 20x20 KM area. ( held by a Baron has numerous estates in it
Numbers
There are three schools of thought, each
based on the total number of fingers a race has.
Elf; base 12. Human; base 10. Dwarf; base 8.
All can easily be divided in half but
Humans encounter a problem when dividing in half again.
Elf; 12 / 6 / 3. Human; 10 / 5 / 2.5.
Dwarf; 8 / 4 / 2.
The advantage Humans have is in working
with large multiples of their base number.
Elf; 12x12 = 144 x12 =1728. Human; 10x10
=100 x10 =1000. Dwarf; 8x8 = 64 x8 = 512.
