Types of BROAD LEAF TREES found on Carsis
These trees tend to have large leaves, which change color in autumn, die
and fall off.
ASHES
These trees are tall but often split into several main branches about a
third of the way up the trunk, thus limiting the size of large planks that may
be cut from one. Their wood tends to be durable and light weight, good for
making furniture and tools.
Blue Ash
A fast growing tree, it prefers damp ground. Its inner bark yields a
blue dye.
Height 60-70 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found in the north
west, lowlands.
White Ash
A slow growing tree, it prefers sandy upland soil. It is prized for the
strength of its wood.
Height 70-80 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found all over the north

Red Ash
A fast growing tree, it prefers low, dry ground. Its inner bark yields a
red dye.
Height 60-70 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found north west,

Box Ash
Similar to white ash except that it is shorter and wider. It is favored
for making boxes.
Height 50-60 ft. Diameter 3-4 ft.

BIRCHES
They are fast growing tree
with leaves that are hart shaped with sawtooth edges. Their bark is highly
flammable, good for starting fires, also easily turned into paper and it may be
used to build temporary shelters -wigwams. Its wood is heavy and durable, used
in furniture and tool making, newly cut it is light coloured, but quickly turns
grey with age.
White Birch
A tall tree, it prefers dry
conditions. Its bark naturally peals in narrow horizontal strips.
Height 70-80 ft. Diameter 1-2 ft.
Commonly found in the north east plains.
Black Birch
A medium tree, it prefers
wetlands. Its wood is heavier than other birches.
Height 50-60 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found all over the north east.
Yellow Birch
A tall tree, it grows best in
acidic soil. Its sap can be used in cooking

BUCKTHORN
A small tree with oval,
sawtoothed leaves. Its bark is scaly and brownish with many thorns. It produces
small red flowers and dark berries, which are bitter but not dangerous to
people. It is one of the fastest growing and most durable plants. It is often
grown as a hedge.
Height 4‑8 ft Diameter 1 ft. Commonly found all
over the north.
CHESTNUT
A big tree with large, narrow
saw toothed leaves. Its bark is dark brown with shinny ridges. It produces
edible, spiny shelled nuts. Its wood is a great golden brown color, durable
with a strait grain; it is a favourite of furniture makers and for interior
use.

ft. An uncommon tree, mostly found
in the south east.
ELM
A large tree often with
drooping lower branches. Its small leaves are hairy beneath and smooth above.
Its bark is dark brown with large scales. It is valued for its stout inner
bark, which can be twisted into ropes and nets. Its wood is strong but often
warps into odd shapes so it is little good for use in buildings. It produces
nuts which are edible but not very appealing.

coast of the Carsis
Sea.
HAZELNUT
A small tree with broad heart shaped leaves. It produces edible nuts
enjoyed by people and animals alike. These nuts are essential in several
Druidic rituals.
Height 10-15 ft Diameter 1 ft. Commonly found in the north
east.
HAWTHORN
A small tree, or shrub, with dense tangle branches, long thorns and
small shiny leaves. They produce small red or yellow apple like fruits. They
make a good hedge and are the preferred nesting place of several types of
songbirds.
Height 4‑8 ft Diameter 1 ft. Commonly found in
the south east.
HICKORIES
These trees tend to be tall with a strait trunk and many small branches.
Their wood is strong, heavy and flexible, but decays quickly in damp
conditions. It is also good as a fuel, producing high grade charcoal. Also it
produces edible nuts.
Pecan
A tall tree, its large mild tasting nuts are highly prized, by both
people and animals.
Height 90-110 ft. Diameter 3-4 ft.
Commonly found in the south west, Arcanis area.
Bitter-nut
A medium tree of lowlands, its nuts are edible but have an unpleasant
bitter flavor.
Height 50-60 ft. Diameter 1-2 ft.
Commonly found in the south west.
Sweet-nut
A medium tree of highlands, its nuts are small bet deliciously sweet.
Height 50-70 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found in the south west.
IRONWOOD
A small tree with a rippled
and sinewy look. Its leaves are small heart shaped. Its bark is smooth and dark
grey in color. Its wood is easily worked when freshly cut, but soon hardens
loses flexibility. If properly worked (a secret process) it may be turned into
items as fine as steel.

ft. It is found commonly in Elven lands.
MAPLES
These trees tend to be large,
with leaves that are five pointed with sawtooth edges. Their bark is smooth
when young becoming rough when older. They produce small flowers in spring.
Their wood is very durable and stain resistant. It is often used for floor
boards, and table tops.
Red Maple
A large tree with big leaves that turn a brilliant red in fall.
Height 60-70 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found in central areas of the north.
Silver Maple
A medium tree with small leaves that tend to be silver white color.
Height 40-60 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found in south coast areas of the north.
Sugar Maple
A large tree, it is valuable
for its sweet sap. A sizable syrup industry exists in the northern kingdoms,
with some farms devoted to sugar maple plantations.

MULBARRY
A small tree with hairy, fine toothed leaves, its bark is reddish brown
with shiny ridges. It produces edible berries, that may be made into wine. The
milk white sap smells good but tastes foul. Its leaves are the favorite food of
the silkworm.

Commonly found the south west, and far south east.
MAGNOLIA
A small tree with large leaves and beautiful fragrant white flowers. It
is frequently grown for its decorative qualities. Its leaves may also serve as
a incense when dried and crushed.

found the south west, also in Haligonia.
NOBLEWOOD
An average size tree, it has
short haired, heart shaped leaves. It produces small yellow flowers and nuts.
It has short stout limbs that are often twisted. Its bark is dark yellow, rough
with smooth shiny areas. Its wood when burnt produces a wonderful smell. Of
medium strength and quality its wood is often used in formal items.

ft. It is found in the far south east.
POPLARS
These trees have long oval leaves with saw tooth edges. They grow fast
on recently burned land, but do not live very long. Their wood is soft and
weak, no good for construction but very good for making paper.
White Poplar
A tall tree it is often silver or gray. Its leaves tend to be leathery.

Commonly found in central western areas.
Aspen
A small tree it is often dark colored. Its bark is used in medicinal
medicine.

A medium tree it is usually yellow. Its leaves are furry.

Oaks
These trees are usually tall and large; they produce acorns and usually
are homes to squirrels. They are slow growing, long lived hardwood trees, with
high amounts of tannin in their bark – this is used in leather working. Most
oaks like deep medium dry soil. Their wood is favored in construction for its
strength. Although it is difficult to work with, it may be bent into shape when
steamed.
White Oak
A medium oak it is the most common type to be found.
Height 60-80 ft. Diameter 2-4 ft.
Commonly found all over the north.
Scarlet Oak
A small oak its wood has a beautiful deep red color.
Height 40-50 ft. Diameter 1-2 ft.
Commonly found in the north, central areas.
Black Oak
A large oak, its wood has a tendency to split along its grain.
Height 80-90 ft. Diameter 3-4 ft.
Commonly found in the far north.
Swamp Oak
A medium oak, it prefers wet ground, although uncommon in deep swamps.
Height 60-70 ft. Diameter 4-6 ft.
Commonly found in the east lands.
Laurel Oak
A tall oak, its leaves particularly large and beautiful. It prefers
sandy coastal soils.
Height 80-100 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found in the south lands.
SOUR‑GUM TREE
An average size tree with
deeply grooved dark red bark. Its oval leaves are shiny and dark green.
It produces bitter tasting
fruits, favoured by black bears. It also produces a sour tasting sap that makes
and excellent water proof glue and it said to help heal burns.
Height 40‑60 ft Diameter 1‑2
ft. It is found along all Inner Ocean
coasts.
WALNUT
A tall tree with long
spearhead shaped leaves. Its leaves when crushed are spicy smelling. Its bark
is dark coloured and deeply grooved. It produces large round nuts that are good
to eat. And yellow‑brown dye can be made from the nut shells. Its wood is has a
nice color, with a crisscross gain that gives it great strength. Although it is
hard to work with, it is valued in construction.

ft. Commonly found along the east
coast of the Inner
Ocean.
WILLOWS
They tend to have long narrow leaves. New bark has dense grey fur but older bark is smooth. All limbs are
extremely flexible and tend to droop. They like damp ground and frequently
dominate riversides. Their flexible twigs are often used in basket weaving and
other wickerwork. Their wood has no value in construction, but their bark is
useful for herbal medicine.
Dwarf Willow
A small tree, it grows in mountainous areas.
Height 20-30 ft. Diameter 2-3 ft.
Commonly found all over the western uplands.
Silver-leaf Willow
A large beautiful tree, it is often part of an Elven garden.
Height 60-70 ft. Diameter 4-6 ft.
Commonly found all around the Inner
Ocean.
Bog Willow
A short, massive tree, it prefers acidic swamps and provides the best
bark of medicinal use.
Height 20-30 ft. Diameter 5-6 ft.
Commonly found in the northern areas.
Sand-dune Willow
A medium tree, it grows best on coastal lands and tidal rivers.
Height 30-50 ft. Diameter 3-4 ft.
Found around the Inner
Ocean coasts.
Weeping Willow
A large tree, it has overly long branches that droop to the ground forming
natural shelters
Height 60-70 ft. Diameter 4-6 ft.
Commonly found all over Carsis.
